BOROUGH EXTENSION.
At the meeting of the Timaru Borough Council on Monday evening the Mayor, Mr J. Hill, proposed a long motion, to the effect that the Premier should be requested to insert a clause in the new municipal corporation's Bill, giving power to Municipal Corporations* to borrow under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act for the purpose of purchasing land adjacent to the borough, to be laid out in garden allotments, for leasing exclusively to working men residing in the borough and at low rentals. The Mayor's motion, which was carried, explains that this would be an inducement to the suburbs to join the Borough of Timaru, a condition precedent to obtaining a satisfactory system of drainage for both.
