Ashburton County Coucil.

A special meeting of the Ashburton Coumy Council was held at Ashburton yesterday ; present— Messrs E. G. Wright, C. J. Harper, D. Cameron, E. Bichards, A. M'Farlane, J. Gtigg, D. Williamson, J. Johnstone, and M. Stitt. The Beturningefficer gave notice of the election of Mr M. Stitt for the Upper Ashburton Biding. On the motion of Mr D. Cameron, seconded by Mr A. M'Farlane, Mr E. G. Wright was appointed Chairman of the Council.

The ordinary meeting of the Council waa then, held, the same members being present. The Engineer's rt port was road and the Banger's reports, diaries, and water-sheets were laid on the table. Several applications for planting were referred to the Plantation Committee. It was deoided to plant one milo with ordinary deciduous trees along the South Boad, near Bakaia. It was decided to approach the railway authorities with reference to a direct road from the Hinds to the Bangitata Bheep bridge. A deputation from the ratepayers- in the Mount S orner a tramway district waited on the Council to ascertain their position with respect to the tramway when the loan expired in 1894. The deputation was informed that the Council could do nothing at present. The amount of the guarantee for cost of poll in Lavington and Done distriots was reduced to _£SD. Mr Friedlander wrote thanking the Council for their resolution of sympathy. It was resolved to instruct the ranger to impound cattle straying in the riverbed, A new water-race at Kuapuna was ordered to be made, the funds being available. Several alterations were made on the rate roll. Several new water-races were granted. A ' slaughtering license was grafted to W. J. Thomas. Mr Stitt was appointed to all tho vacancies on the Council caused by Mr Friedlander's resignation. The following tenders were accepted: — Fencing, No. 1, F. Low; No. 2, T. Pritchard ; strainers. Tucker and Bean ; wire and standards, H.Zander ; ploughing, No. 1, F. B'.ack ; No. 3, — . Forßyth. Fresh tenderß to be called for No. 2.
