Tepid Swimming Bath.

A meeting of preaidente, vice-presidents and delegates from the Christohurch amateur swimming' clubs was held at the Clarendon Hotel, last evening* present — Messrs E. W. Boper (E±s6 Christohurch) in the chair, E. C. Ash by, A. Francis and J. M. Watson (Christchurch), W. Jacques (Sydenham), W. H. Seed (East Christchurch), 6. Milne (Richmond), and G. J. C. Smart, honorary secretary. The Chairman said that the meeting had been called to arrange a course of action, and to consider the plans and estimates for a bath which had been forwarded by the City Council.

Tue plans aud estimates were laid on the table.

The Secretary read a letter from Mr Hendry, honorary secretary of the New South Wales Amateur Swimming Association, giving details' of the j)lan under which the Natatorium Baths in Sydney were managed ; stating the cost of erecting and maintaining the baths, and enclosing photographs.

A letter was read from the Town Clerk, Napier, forwarding particulars of the bath belonging to Mr G. H. Swan, mayor of Napier. This bath had been erected at a cost of about .£BOO, and the water was heated to 80 degrees by .a Boven-horse power boiler.

The Chairman said that the plans and estimates prepared by the City Surveyor and Mr T. Cane were too elaborate. He thought a bath could be erected at a much smaller cost than that estimated by the City Surveyor. Plans had been prepared foe a very fine bath, but he (the Chairman) would not think of asking the City Council to build a bath which, without allowing for the ground, would ccmt over £3000 and JEBOO a year for maintenance. He believed that a bath could be erected for one- third the amount estimated. If the Council gave a grant of, say, £1500 and a site, he waa sure the delegates would have very little difficulty in finding the balance.

The representatives present endorsed the Chairman's remarks, and after a lengthy discussion a sub-committee was appointed to prepare modified plans to be submitted to a future meeting.

A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Honorary Secretary of the New South Wales Bwimir>ing Association for the in* formation contained in his letter, and to Mr Walkden, City Surveyor, for his asrietance to the committee.

The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge receipt of the plans and estimates from the City Council.

The meeting then closed.
