Compared with the general election t_e polling to-day passed off quietly, but there were large numbers of ladies about the streets and detachments at each pollingbooth to urge the claims of the temperance ticket and "no license." The publican party adopted reduction, and issued slips to electors showing how to vote for it<There was a steady stream of voters throughout the day at most of the polling" ; booths in the city and suburbs, and the [ general opinion was that the prohibition i vote in most districts would be heavy. ! With three returns to come the results are :— Temperance — Wardrop 4097, Jolly 3963, Scott 3947, Selby 3912, Walker 3886, Warran 3835, Spears 3797, Dickeon 3744 ; moderates— Horsburgh 3227, Hislop 3140, Jeflcoat 2982, Hogg 2882, Elder 2820, Henderson 2782, Wilkinson 2727, Connor 2642, Fish 1496. Informal 672. At a late hour the total figures were not available. The majority for prohibition is expected to be short by 300. y March 22. i. The city vote was effective under local 1 option by a large majority; 7482 valid vote 3 were cast. The Eeturning Officer declared 4470 cast for prohibition. If eighteen more had been given, prohibition would have been carried. The result of the voting was:— For publicans' licenses— Continuance, 1359; reduction, 2479; no license, 3903. For bottle licenses— Continuance, 1411 ; reduction, 1827 ; no license, 4470.
