The local option voting resulted as follows : — Continuance, 744; reduction, 74 ; prohibition, 473. Patea.— The returns are incomplete, but there is no doubt that the moderate ticket has been carried intact — Sutton, Adamson, Symes (2); Hall, Brett, Balmforth, and Durie. The local option returns give a majority for licenses to remain as at present. The returns to come are not likely to affect the result. Rangitikbi.— 'Six moderates and two independents were elected on the committee. The local option poll will be invalid. Wellington Sububbs. — In the Buburban election, Petone and Hutb voted strongly in favour of reduction, but the complete returns will not be known for some time. Njjlbon.— At the election of licensing committee, the anti-prohibitionists carried eight candidates by large majorities over the highest prohibitionist. The result of the poll about licenses will not be known till late this afternoon. Gbeymotjth.-— There was very little excitement over the elections. At eleven no returns, except from small polling-places which are of not much consequence, had been received. Brunner, Cobden and Teremakau went for temperanoe committees, and Paroa for licenses to remain as at present. It is expected that Greymouth will vote for a reduction and a temperance committee. The women are voting largely in favour of a reduction. The country voting will mainly be favourable to the licensed victuallers. Westland.— The licensing elections, so far, give a decided majority in favour of licenses continuing as at present in the three classes. The country votes will, probably, considerably increase this majority, but it is still doubtful if onehalf the total number on the roll will vote. The moderate candidates for the committee generally have the lead. Blenheim. — The licensing election passed off quietly. The whole eight candidates put up by the moderate party have a lead, with a wide margin, and the few | returns yet to come will not affect the result. It cannot be ascertained yet if a sufficient number have voted to validate the local option poll, but the voting is thought to be for licenses to remain as at present. Oamabtt.— The Prohibition Committee was elected. Complete reduction was carried under all three heads. Waitakl — The result will not be known till to-night, but reduction is certain. Port Chalmebs. — The final returns are — Begg 1534, Thomson 1524, Aitken 1505, Hodge 1490, Stewart 1484, Davie 1474, Calder 1458, Wilson 1178. The Temperance Committee has been elected. Allen heads the Moderates with 901. The local option poll was as follows : — Publicans, continuation 559, reduction 383, no license 1274. Bottle, continuation, 566, reduction 255, no license 1681. It is understood that Port Chalmerß missed prohibition by less thau fifty votes. A temperance committee has been elected. With two returns to come, the majority for prohibition is short by fifty. Cavebbham. — A temperance commits was elected. The vote was effective, but the required majority for "no license" was not secured. Taieri. — The local option poll for Taieri will be ineffective, half the number on the roll not recording their votes. For the Licensing Committee the temperance candidates have a substantial majority. Cltttha.— The temperance candidates at Clutha average 1450 each and the moderates 450. Seven returns are yet to come. The necessary three-fifths majority will be cast to make the prohibition vote effective. Matauba.— The polls are supposed to be heavy for prohibition and the temperance candidates. The returns from Mataura township give 104 for prohibition, 16 for reduction and 82 for licenses to remain as at present. No more returna are expected to-night. Awabxja.— Returns from seven booths in Awarua give the temperance candidates a majority. The prohibition votes numbered 264, those for a reduction 39, and those for the licenses to remain as at present 124. Invercargilli. — The complete returns for Invercargill are— No change, 703 ; reduction, 296; prohibition, 1149. The number short of carrying prohibition was only 139, and there were over 500 informal votes. Otherwise it would certainly have been carried. All temperance candidates, pledged to reduce to the full extent, have been returned. From the country electorates the returns so far are very incomplete. Wallace. — The only returns yet available from Wallace are those from the Riverton booth, where the local option poll numbers are : — Licenses as at present 18, for a reduction 6, no license 69. The moderate nominees head the yoll so far.
