LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council waß held on Monday evening 5 present — His Worship the Mayor i and Councillors Laurenson, Owen, Webb, ! Chambers, Pair.man, Schumacher, Stinaon and Mitchell. An apology for the nonattendance of Councillor Eadcliffe was received. THE HTJBSES' HOME. Messrs W. Moor and M. W. Miller.Chairman and Secretary of the Christchurch Hospital Board, waited on the Council to urge the claims of the proposed Nurses' Home, and the Council decided to grant the sum of *E3O towards the institution. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received ; From the Rev E. E. Chambers, secretary of the West LytteUou School Committee, drawing the Council's attention to the existence of some bad drains in the vicinity 'of the school. The matter was referred to the Sanitary Committee. Prom Mr G. Pitcaithley, offering to purchase a volume of " Hooker's New Zealand Flora," in the public library. It was decided not to dispose of the book. From the Government Life Insurance Department, having reference to the loan. The matter was referred to the Water Supply and Finance Committees to report upon at the next meeting. From Mr H. R. Webb, calling the attention of the Council to a nuisance caused by a bad drain close to his property in Canterbury Street. The letter was referred to the Sanitary Committee to leport. From Mr J. Bethke, informing tha Council that although licensed by the Council as a porter he wa3 prevented from applying for hire at the Railway Station. The By-laws Committee was instructed to inquire into the matter. \ From Mr R. M. Griffiths, returning officer for the Lyttelton district, forwarding the namea of the persons elected as a licensing committee. The sum of J825 was voted to the returning officer for expenses in connection with the licensing election. REPORTS, FINANCE, J3TC. commended payments amounting to £184 3s Id. Councillor Mitchell, as chairman of the Recreation Ground Committee, stated that he had been applied to by the Lyttelton Athletic Association for leave to mark out : goal-lines, &c, for the purpose of playing football, and he (the chairman) had granted permission. It waa pointed out tbat at the last meeting of the Council it had been decided to open the ground for cricket matches only, subject to the permission of the Council. Eventually it was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Becreation Ground Committee to grant permission to play cricket and football matches only upon it. The Water-supply Committee reported that the quantity of water used at the Lyttelton Orphanage was now much le?s than when the existing arrangements were made, and the matter was left in the hands of the Finance Committee with power to take action in reducing the amount charged. It was resolved to instruct the foreman to enforce the Hawkera' and Peddlers' Bylaw. The Engineer at the waterworks reported that the reservoir had been emptied and cleaned, and was now nearly full again. After disposing of some minor matters, the Council adjourned.
