ARCHBISHOP OF ADELAIDE.

SYDNEY, Oct. 4. | Dr Higgins, Auxiliary Roman Catholic Bishop of Sydney, has been chosen Archbishop of Adelaide, in succession to Dr j Reynolds. j ALLEGED DEFALCATIONS. The Mayor has suspended the City Solicitor, Mr George Merriman, for alleged irregularities extending over a period of nearly two years. It is believed that there is a deficiency of between four and five thousand pounds. The sums involved comprise moneys handed to Merriman to pay for city work, which it is found has not been paid for. Merriman was lately very ill, and during hia absence his books were examined and the deficiency discovered. THE NOUMEA CABLE. BRISBANE, Oct. 4. The Poßtmaster-General reports that although the Noumea cable is ostensibly the first liak of a line to connect; Australia and Vancouver, no exclusive right has been given to France, and the Government of Queensland is free to enter into any arrangement with another Company for a separate line.
