POLITICAL NOTES.
[.Special to the "Stab."") WELLINGTON, June 30. Tho Premior told a deputation of members in favour of the Direct Veto Bill that his pergonal opinion on the subject coincided wiih theira, but that ho could not indicate the Government's attitude towards th*; quobtion until tho Becond reading of the Bill was reached. Critics of the Railway Administration allege that whereas tho total amount of salaries over £200 a year is greater now than wh«*n tho Commissioners took oflice, the number of officers is smaller, thus proving Mm tendency to reduce the pay of men ou low salaries while increasing tho pay of thi oflii-ial staff. A rumour is current that Mr Cadman intends n-Hi^uiug his Beat and seeking reelection. This, however, is contradicted by the fad that all telegrams received by him from his constituents expret-s unabated coi fiilenco in him. Tho feeling is that if Mi- Otidinan were to stand the test of rc-elec ion, thero would bo no objection to his reii statement in the Cabinet. Many Natives tr in all over tho Colony have telegraphed to Mr Cadman, expr^siug regret at hia resignation of tho Native portfolio. Colonel Fox's report on the defence forces, a voluminous document, will be presented to the Houae this atternoon. Ministers met in Cabinet to-day and considered the question of appointing a now viinister in the Upper House, but no . decision whs arrived at. j The Goidfifilds, Native Affairß, and Public Pditioiiß Committees met to-day, : and appointed the same Chairman as last ; seßsiou. j Sir Robert Stout leaves for Dunediu this afteruoon, but will return in timo to take part in the financial debate, and to move th« second reading of the Direct Veto Bill.
