Overcrowding a Steamer.
[Per Press Association.] ! AUCKLAND, June 21. Captain Anderson, of the steamship Waihora, was charged at the Police Court to-day by the Customs with overcrowding the steamer on May IC, on the voyage from Sydney to Auckland. The vgbsol is licensed j to carry one hundred and thirty-eight i Baloon and eighty-four steerage passengers, or two hundred and twenty-two altogether. On the trip in question she had thirty-five | steerage passengers in excess, but fifty j short of the saloon limit. In the defence it waa asserted that the excess of steerage j passengera was not discovered until the vessel had left Sydney Harbour, when five were accommodated with settees in the saloon cardroom, and a tent rigged for the remainder in the forehatch, and these were given mattresses to sleep upon. Mr Bush, R.M., imposed a fine of £10 and costs.
