PREMIER BOOT FACTORY.
Saturday was chosen as the day for the employees of Messrs M. O'Brien and Co. to hold their annual picnic There were about 270 present,' including all the employees and a number of their relatives. Mr and Mrs O'Brien, who contributed liberally towards the expense of the picnic, were present with their family. The party met at the Christchurch railway station and went to Port by an early train, afterwards embarking in , the steamer John Anderson for Diamond Harbour, where the day was spent in a very enjoyable way, Mr and Mrs Marshal), the proprietors, having made excellent provision for the accommodation and comfort of the large party. During the day a number of sports were held, for whioh prizes were givan by several tradesmen in Christchurch. Dancing was Indulged in by a number of those present, the Social Hall being nicely prepared for the purpose. Mr Brockett's string band supplied the music. The Mayor of Christohuroh and Mrs George were among the. visitors, and his Worship, with Mr and Mrs O'Brien, officiated in the responsible position of judge in the baby show. The following are the results of the races, &c. :— Apprentices' Eace, F. O'Brien; Married Men's Race, C. Gates ; Single Women's Race, Mieß Patterson ; Premier Handicap, J. O'Brien 1, T. Jones 2, R. Coleman and J. Ballanty ne dead heat, 3 ; Married Women's ! Eace, Mrs Ballanty ne; 120 yds Foot-race ' (for cyclists only), J. Kent ; Three-legged Eace, F. Willsteed and T. Jones ; Ladies' Eace (married or single), Mrs Kemp ; Quoit Match, J. Kent; Baby Show, Mrs Yellop'e baby 1, Mrs'Dodd's baby 2, Mrs Wilsteed'a baby 3 ; Committee Eace, J. Taylor. The children were well provided for in the matter of toys and lollies.
