A Shipping Case.
♦ [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Mat 29. A case of importance to shippers came before the R.M. Court to-day, and judgement was reserved. Mr D. M. Spec-ding -was the plaintiff and the New Zealand 'Shipping Company the defendant, plaintiff, claiming £40 damages. Shortly stated "the facts were that Messrs Collyns and Co., London, shipped by the Duke of Buckingham certain goods, and received the bills of lading, which purported on the face of them that the freight had been paid in London. The bills wero sold in ihe open market and purchased by Mr Speddtnga' agent. When the goods arrived here, deUvery was refuaed by the Shipping Company until the freight was paid. ' Mr Speddings having sold the goods, paid the freight nnder protest both as to the sum payable and the rate. There was another case, in which pianoa were shipped from Hamburg vi__ London, the bill of lading being stamped "freight prepaid." The Company here gave up two pianos, but retained the other until the freight on the -three was paid.
