Repairing the Damage.
A start was made on Sunday night to pump the water out of the gasometer, so that the damaged plates could be taken out. After a couple of hours' work, however, the men were sent away, and an early start was made to-day. A gang of twenty men took turns at the engine belonging to the Fire Brigade, and good progress was made pumping the water out of the huge meter. At the same time a gang of men from Messrs Anderson's foundry, under Mr Urquhart, commenced the work of cutting out the broken and dented plates. Until the water is all pumped out of the gasometer nothing can be done, as it is not known whether or not the bottom of the meter is damaged. The stone is still nnder water, but if pumping proceeds as successfully during the afternoon as it did in the forenoon, the stone will soon come in view.
The churches had to do the best they could with candles and kerosene lamps ai last night's services.
