THE SUMNER TRAMWAY.

-«. The Rate of Wages. Judging from the statements of many of those who are in a position to know, the the works in connection with the construction of the Sumner tramway are not calculated to relieve the condition of the labour market, a3 the men engaged on it are chiefly those in regular employment, while the contract for the rock cutting has been sub-let to experts, and will be done at contraot rates, viz., one shilling and threepence per cubic yard. At this rate it is computed that these men will hardly make Bix shillings a day. Mr Brightling's men, who, by the way, have been with him a long time, are getting- the same rate of wage that he has paid them for years past, viz., seven shillings, and as his is the large contract, it may be calculated that that is about the ordinary rate that will be given should any additional labour be required. The bridge hands and other experts engaged on the work will start ' work next week. ======
