I Sheep Returns. — The decrease in tho | number of sheep in Canterbury up to May j 31 last, according to the returns now com- | pledted, is 216,000, as against 284,000 last year ; and Mr Foster, Chief Inspector, anticipates that from the number of additional breeders, and a probable good lambing, this will be reduced to a minimum next season. Up to the present the lambing returns are very satisfactory. Evangelistic Services. — According to advertisement in this isstie, Mr Duncan Wright, evangelist, is a?*ain in this city, and will conduct special services in the North belt Presbyterian Church to-morrow (Sunday), at 11 a.m. and 6.30 p.m., and each evening during the week at 7.30. Mr Wright's present tour has already occupied nearly four months, during which he has held many missions in and around AuckI land and Wellington. The evangelist both sings and preaches the Gospel. A cordial invitation is offered to all to attend. Lax Charitable Aid. — At last night's meeting of the Bangiora Borough Council, it was alleged by Councillor Cone that the recipients of charitable aid were compelled to take at one time sufficient bread and meat to serve them a week, and, consequently, before the rations day come round again, the articles were often unfit for ! human food. He denounced the shamefulness of the arrangement in 6trong terms, and the Council, agreeing with his remarks, resolved to ask the Charitable Aid Board to allow the recipients to receive their bread and meat three times a week.
