At the breaking-up of one of the schools to-day, Sir R. Stout quoted statistics to show that the charge brought against our system of education — that it had a tendency to produce criminals — was unfounded. A deputation waits on the Premier tomorrow to bring under his notice the hardship imposed on freeholders of small township sections in being debarred from applying under the homestead system. The Captain of the South Dunedin Volunteers, being of opinion that many of the members of his company were not desirable members, called upon about 20 men to resign and hand in their arms. The Roelyn Borough Council have resolved to impose a special rate of 3d in the £, in order to comply with the demands of I the Charitable Aid Board for their contri- J bution. The papers demaading the rate] are to be beaded " Poor rate." I
