NEW ZEALAND PROTECTION ASSOCIATION.
The usual weekly meeting was held in the Protection Hall on Tuesday last. The President occupied the chair, and a large amount of business was transacted and~ correspondence read.
In opening the meeting, the President stated he had called upon the Hon. J. Ballance, re addressing the public of Christchurch under the auspices of th» Association, and that he had expressed himself as being with them in their effortsHe would have liked very much to hare complied with their invitation, but wasnofc able to do so at present. Later on,however, he might avail himself of an opportunity. The President also informccL the meeting that the new proprietor of the Wellington Industrial Gazette had published a leader in the last number, advocating protection to native industries, and signified his intention of throwing his columns open to the discussion of the subject. He thought this must be very gratifying to the Association to have such an_ important journal advocating the cause which it had previously worked in opposition to.
After the President sat down, a vote of congratulation was unanimously passed to the editor of the Industrial Gazette for advocating the cause of protection. A letter was read from. Mr John Mason, of Auckland, re the working of the Industrial Association recently formed in that, city.
The sub-leader which appeared in theLyttelton Times of Tuesday last, commenting on the state of trade in New South. Wales, and the prospect of their adopting a protective policy, was read, and highly approved of by the Association. Mr Scott's letter, re having the rolling stock and other work for the Midland Railway made in the Colony, and which, has already appeared in this paper, was considered satisfactory.
After transacting some further business* the meeting adjourned.
