THE DAMAGE AT LYTTELTON.
> Eeports are now coming in as to the damage done in the Lyttelton district. , From Governor's Bay two large slips are • reported, one on Mr Tapley's property, • above the Governor's Bay road, from which a considerable quantity of ddbria has fallen on to the road. Another on Mr Pott's property, where ft slip Las ! occurred from one of hiß'paddocta into the i sea. The road from the Bay to Lyttelton \ i 3 still impassable to vehicles. The Borough ■ bathing place at ?Ly ttelton has received < < serious damage, the breakwater which | was erected at the south-west end of j the bathing place having been nearly de- '■ molished. The damage previously reported . to the Gladstone Pier is not so serious after ' all, as, with the exception of the washing i away of some ballast from the outer line of j rails on the breakwater, nothing is notice- i able there. At the Prison Reclatna- J .tion Works beyond Officers' Point, con-] siderable damage has been done by l the sea washing away the reclaimed land. 1 Throughout the town itself complaints are ' rife of damage «by water and slips, many 1 . people 'having suffered more or less severely, and only the man whose house > is *f built on a -rock " wears a smiling ' f»r>p. ■ i
