A GENERAL ESTIMATE.

THE RAILWAYS. The bad weather which has affected Canterbury—in common with most of the South Island —for the past week, appears at last. to have come to an end, so far at least as ' Christchurch is concerned. The rain ceased j at an early hour this morning, and there is J (now every indication that the weather is j clearing up. The damage is confined to-the j flooding of gardens and cellars, and to-day ! a good deal of hard work was done in emptying the latter of the water which invaded them. The drains and sewers Ihave proved equal to the strain put upon » them, and in no case, so far as is known at i present, have any of the latter " burst up." j 'The Addington Workshops, which were partially flooded yesterday, are now free j from, water. j The only damage to the North Canterbury Railways is on the Little River line, ! jportions of which have been washed away ' •between Birdling's Flat and Little Eiver. j !It is anticipated that the repairs necessary to render the line fit for traffic agaiu will; occupy about >& week. Information has j •been received of a break on the South line, j between Studholme Junction and Waiho, j and of another between Waitaki and ■ Hilderthorpe, about five miles further ; • south. The Waimate branch line is not 'interrupted. According to Mr Staneell's record, the rainfall during the recent gale, from Friday evening to this morning, was ■ S'^in.
