FATAL ACCIDENT.
I A sad occurrence, reoulting in the death. 1 of an infant through the collision of twovehicles, took place on. the Lincoln road, on. Saturday evening, Mrs Dempsey (the wife of Mr Patrick* Etempeey, who is employed at the Addington Workshops, and lives at Balswell) was driving towards town in a spring, cart with her two children in order to meet her hubband, and go shopping after he had left his work. Her horse was a very quiet animal, and she was on the proper side of the road* dor- n towards the fence. When about three-quarters of' ft mile from the Sunnyside Asylum, and opposite the residence of Mr Bell, Bhe nusb a man named Mirchoff> driving out towards the Halswell Hotel in a spring cart, and' in company with another man whose name could not be ascertained. It appears that:t2k# road has been recently metalled, and. Mirohoff was apparently trying to keep o2 the rough stones, when by some means* or other the traps came into collision. The result was that Mrs Dempsey and' her baby, 10 months old, were thrown onft of the trap, the baby falling on his Load. Mre Deinpeey does not Beem to have been much hurt, but her trap and harness. m 1 re damaged. The accident was witneesod by Mr and Mrs Bell, and the former ran out of his premises and rendered all the assisiance he could. Mrs Dempßey came on to Christchurch with the baby, whom Bho took to Dr Turnbull. He did all he could for the little sufferer, but the case was one beyond the reach of human aid, the Gfcull having been badly fractured. Mrß Dempsey returned home with the child, who died at six minutes to 1 o'clock on Sunday morning. An inquest will be held aii the Hals well schoolroom at A p.m. to-day.
