After a retirement of an hour and a half, the jury roturned a verdict — "That William Holly man came by his death through injuries received by the falling of a portion of the new bridge in course, of construction, which, in our opinion, is attributable •to faulty design and construction by the City Surveyor and his foreman, combined with bad workmanship ; to which we add the following rider — 'We consider the Council are to blame in causing- a work of this unusual character to be undertaken without first submitting the plans and •■ specifications to a competent engineer, and for not appointing a skilled inspector over, the work. We are also of opinion that the conduct of the witnesses J. H. Harris and .Lawrence Akersten is highly reprehensible, for not warning the workmen under the arch of the danger they wero in.' "
