LYTTELTON BEGATTA, 1883.

A meeting was held at the Colonists' Hall, Lyttelton, last evening, for the purpose of making arrangements for the Begatta of 1883. His Worship the Mayor. Mr Harry Allwright, M.H.8., presided. The minutes of the last general meeting were read and confirmed. The balance-sheet for the last Begatta was received and adopted. It showed a balance to tho credit of the regatta fond of £29 2s 7d. The total expenditure for tbo regatta of 1882 was £451 )9s lld. It was moved—" That the annual regatta be held on Jan. 1, 1883." Mr Owen Jonea suggested that the regatta should be held on a day on which there wore no other attractions and amusements held in Chriatchurch or elsewhere. He thought that the meeting should appoint a Oommittee, and empower them to make arrangements for the day on which the regatta should bo held. He considered that if a ship could be dockod on the day that the regatta waa held, it would be the means of inducing a large number of peoplo to visit Lyttelton. Iho Union Steam Shipping Oompany might bo induced to havo one or moro of thoir large steamors in tho port that day, and that would also be the means of induoing people to come through to the port. Ho moved an amendment — "That the Committee bfl elected and empowered to appoint the day." 'Ihe amendment on being put wea lost, and the original motion carried. Mr F. Ronalds was elected as Honorary Treasurer for the ensuing year. Mr T, L. Smith was proposed for the offioe of Secretary, a bigh enconium being passed on him for the manner in whioh ho had carried out) the duties of tho office for the past two years. Mr J. E. Willcox waa unanimously elected as Secretary. A Committee was elected. Mr Holmes moved that the Shore Sports bo amalgamated with tho Regatta, and carried on by the samo Committee. Mr 8. R. Wobb spoke Bgainst tho motion. He considered that the land sports could bo woll dispensed with for the future, particularly as there was no Buitable place to carry out such sports in Lyttelton. He thought it would bo far better if tho money that, was expanded on land sports was addod to the Regatta funds. The resolution, on being put, was vociferously negatived. The Committee were authorised to appoint officers and make all neceaaary arrangement for tho Begatta.
