AN ORIGINAL IDEA.

Life ia not all " beer and skittles," even with newspaper proprietors ; and the hardships which may sometimes have to be experienced appeared to have been rather severely felt by the proprietor of the Northern Luminary, a weekly journal published at Kawakawa, Bay of Islands. In his issue of August 6, the proprietor published the following pertinent announcement : — "On the tramp.— The proprietors, in anticipation of picking up a few ' crumbs,* contemplate paying a visit to Russell, Waimate, Whangaroa, Mongonui, and Herd's Point, with the plant of the Luminary, and trust that by making the same a travelling concern every six months in the year, sufficient support will be accorded as will enable the Luminary to eke out a livelihood in Kawakawa for the remaining six months of the year. Being ever alive to the interesta of the North (and our own) we trust the happy idea will be a profitable one to all parties. A new and improved portable printing machine (driven by gas, to be manufactured in a tent) will accompany the plant. We hope our friends will be as lenient as posaible in their charges for board and lodging, and ground rent for the ' fixtures.' We shall invite all to come and inspect the staff " type-snatch-ing and printing,' which, it is fully anticipated, will be going on r'ght and day for about four weeka in the localities named."
