BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the Christchurch Benevolent Association was held at the City Council Chambers at half-paat two o'clock this afternoon ; present— Mr T. C. Ick, Mr Mitchell, the Rev T. Flavell, Mr Harriß, Mr G. Booth, Mr John Ollivier, MrW. M. Maskell, Mr J.E. March, Dr Prins, Mr W. Pratt, the Rev E. O. Penny and the Rev Father Ginaty. The chair was taken by Mr 0. T. Ick, who explained that the Honorary Secretary had to leave on other business. The business specially dealt with was the election of a new Oommittee.

Letters were read — From the Honorary Secretary, and from Mr Packer, containing various suggestions. Letters had also been received from various gentlemen who were willing to act on the Committee. The following were duly appointed as the Committee, on the motion of the Bey T. Flavell, seconded hy Mr J. E. March :— Messrs Pratt, Hawkes, Ick, Mitchell, Packer, Jameson, Maskell, Ollivier, Clark, Booth, Harris, and J. T. Hrown.

Mr John OHivior remarked that the names of the clergy had been excluded, for the same reason which was put forward last year, that those gentlemen, whilst co-operating with the Committee, might yet be perfectly independent. In investigating caßes, a large amount of work was involved, and the clergy, had been enabled, by reason of their position and experience, to render most valuablo aid in thia direction.

The Revs T. Flavell and E. G. Penny fully concurred. They would continue to cooperate heartily with the Committee, but would at the came time prefer to be independent of the Committee.

Mr Ollivier assumed that one of the duties of the new Oommittee would be to see how far they could proceed in the direotion of establishing a permanent institution. He thought that the Committee might very well prepare recommendations for a scheme, to be laid before a general meeting of subscribers. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
