"3. Mr Agniti has applied, on bohnlf of a Company, for permission to orect a tent opposite tho Theatre in Gloucester street, for tho purpose of a circus to bo opened to the public on Dec. 17. "4. Some timo back tho Council agreed with the Drainage Board to bear part of the expense in purchasing 1 md to continue Salisbury street east, from Barbadoes street, to Cambridge terrace, and to form that portion of the road. The. Drainage Board have now finished their work under ground, and desire to hand tho land over to the Council to enable tho street to be completed." Councillor Gapes reported that the Fire i Insurance Association were prepared to give ' one-third of the cost— up to £300 in all — for ', sinking three wells to the lowor stratum. With regard to the ereotion of the-Firebell, they adhered to their former resolution. It was resolved to sink one well to the second stratum as a test— alternative tenders to be called for sinking a 2£in and 3in well 1 near the Cathedral square tank. ! SANITABV. Councillor Lambert reported that Mr Brightling, the night soil contractor, could not give the Sanitary Committee any definite roply relative to starting on his work later than 11 o'clock, but would wait upon tho Council that evening. Mr Brightling said he could not see his way to go out later than 11 p.m., as it would put him to tho expenso of a horse and dray and two extra men. Ho would find the horse and dray if tho Council found tho two men at £2 15s each— £2B6 per year. Further discussion was postponed till next meeting, when Councillor Hulbert intimated ke would bring forward resolutions on the subject. PIRE BELL TOWER. Councillor King moved, " That the motion of Councillor Cherrill, dated Nov. 24, 1879, re tho fire bell tower be rescinded." Councillor England seconded. ' The motion was negatived. RESIGNATION OF WATER SUPPLY COMMITTEE. Councillor Ayers expressed a desire to table a motion to dissolve tho existing Water Supply Committee, as three of tho members -wished to be relieved of office. During a conversational discussion it was pointed out that the Committee could not work harmoniously together, as certain members of, the Committee were absolutely opposed to the proposed or any scheme. Councillor Ayera, Chorrill and Vincent then tendered their resignations, and the rest of the Committee followed the example set. Ultimately, upon ballot, tho following Councillors were elected :— Councillors Vincent, King, Cherrill, Cuff and Ayers, Councillor Vincont to bo Chairman. The Council then adjourned to Wednesday week. Deo. 17, when the annual meeting takes place.
