BOROUGH COUNCIL.

BYDENHAM. The fortnightly meeting of the Sydenhain Borough Council was held at seven o'clock last evening ; present — Councillors Hall, Brown, White, Andrew, Nicholl, Pavitt, Langdown, and Charters. Councillor Hall was|voted to the chair. CORRESPONDENCE. The Beturning Officer for the Borough, Mr Charles Allison, jun., notified the result of tho recent Mayoral election. From the Treasury, Wellington, information was received giving particulars of the charge of £17 16a 3d, coat of . survey of the Borough reserves. From tho Christchurch representatives letters were received, relative to the resolutions which had been forwarded by the Council re the Municipal Corporations Act and the cattle market reserve. The Engineer to the Drainage Board offered to the Council the material of the old atone drain iv the Gasworks road (20 cubio yards per running chain) conditionally upon the Council agreeing to fill up tho drain, tho surplus earth from tho works to be utilised by the Council. A petition was read, asking for a railway crossing from Harper street to the South belt. From the Colonial Secretary's office s notification was received that the Council's letter relative to a foot-bridge over the railway, had been referred to the Public Works Depart--1 ment. An opinion was read from Messrs Garrick and Cowliehaw, re tho matter in 1 dispute between the Council and tho Gas Company, payment into Court of the amount claimed being advised. Tho Council decidod that thoy could not see their way to accept the offer of the . Drainage Board, but that thoy would be glad to treat with the Drainage Board for the 1 purchase of the atone after it had been taken 1 up. It was resolved to eend a copy of the 1 petition, asking for a crossing at Harper street, to the Commissioner of Bailways. It appeared that the amount due to the Gas Company had already been paid into Court, as advised. ' PINAIfCB. The Finance Committee reported receipts £443 9s Id; credit balance at Bank, £1053 3s 9d ; accounts passed for payment, £96 7s 9d. The Committee reported having accepted the tender of Mr Francis Pavitt, to act as valuator, for the sum of £55. The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported that the deed of submission in connection with Beattie's contract had been approved, and signed on behalf of the Council, the matter, being now before the arbitrators. Wilson's bridge having been reports d as unsafe for heavy traffic, the Committee had asked the Heathcote Road Board to contribute one-half the cost of a new bridge. On the motion of Councillor White, the report was received and adopted. SANITARY COMMITTEE. The Sanitary Committee reported haying received verbal and writtert Complaint relative to soap candle works in Montreal street. A copy of the letter had been forwarded to the Local Board of Health, and the Inspector had alto laid an information against Mr Hancock forallowicg ; offensive liquor to flow from his premises into the street. The Inspector had been instructed to lay informations against Messrs A. Mole, J. 8. Button, and W. Holly, who had failed to comply with notices Berved on them.to abate nuisances. ' Tho report was received and adopted. MAYOHAIr. Councillor Brown : having taken tho Chair, Councillor Hall referred to tho difficulty which had at times been occasioned during tho past year in consequence of the unfortunate indisposition of His Worship tho Mayor, and urged the desirability of having a DeputyMayor appointed. ;' Ho movod— subjeot to the approval of tho Mayor elect— that the unsuccessful candidate bo the Deputy-Mayor during the ensuing year. Tho resolution was seconded by Councillor Pftvitt, and after considerable discussion tho Council voted as follows :~Ayes : Councillors Langdown, Hall, Charters, and Pavitt. Noes : Councillors Brown,!
