The Commercial Hotel had a narrow escape from destruction last night. A constable on dut- noticed fire in * bed-rcom, and it Tfßl extinguished before much damage was done. A farther detachment of Armed Constabulary were sent to Patea this morning. A further number are in the barracks ready to be sent as soon as they are required. It has been decided to form a Bellringers Association ia connection with the peal coming out for the new St. Peter's Church. Mr George Darrell has retained MrW.T. Travers to defend the libel action brought by the Saturday Advertiser, and also to prosecute his action against them.

Mr H. Lyon has been appointed secretary of the Wellington Jockey Ciub, vice Mr Crombio, resigned. ' .

LIBERAL CANDIDATES. The Liberal Association hare eelooted Messrs W; Hutchison and G. Fisher as their candidates for the city of Wellington, and have appointed a deputation to /wait on Sir George Grey to ask him to addreßß the electors on their behalf.
