A serious ohargo has been made against Captain Evans, of the barque Easterhill. The alleged facts upon which tho charge has been made against tho Captain are as follows : — That shortly before 8 a.m. on Jan. 9 the lad Taylor was ordered aloft fco overhaul the foreroyal buntlines ; he nearly succeeded in reaching the royal yard, when ho slid down as far as the cross-trees. Ho then took off his boots, mado another attempt, and succeeded. Having overhauled the buntlines, he put on Ilis boots again and came on dick. No sooner had he reached the deck than he was ordered tip the main rigging to overhaul fche main royal buntlines, and had succeeded in rcuehing the maintop when ho shouted down to (he oiil.er that he was unable to proceod further. He was, however, ordered not to come on deck until ho had overhauled fchem. The lad again took off his boots, and with great difficulty managed to got his knee on to the foot rope, whilst with one hand he held ou to the royal backstay. Apparently, however, he was. too exhausted to roach tlio yard, and slid back down tho stay until he reached fche port outrigger. There he turned a somersault, falling on fco fche lower rigging, and in so doing broke one of tho ratlines. Thence he struck the rail and slid into tho sea. He did not, however, sink, and one of fche crew named .Johnston ran aft, jumped overboard, and endeavoured to reach him, bufc failed in his^ attempt. Tho vessel at fchis timo is said to have been going afc fche rate of aboufc two knots per hour, and one of the passengers threw a rope to Johnston, *by wliieh he was drawn on board. Ifc is asserted that no attempt was made to lower any boat, aud fchat the master ordered his steward to place breakfast on the table, although the poor lad was then floating a short distance astern of the ship. Mr Rignold is drawing good housos afc the Princess Theatre.
Mr Vurley had an interview at his meeting lasfc evening with the Times' reporter. Mr Varley' treated the reporter as an anxious inquirer at first, and being informed of the reporter's object in attending the meeting, took advantage of fche opportunity to admonish him concerning a paragraph he admitted having written. The interview is said to have consisted of a strange combination of personal anger, evangelistic zeal and satirical remarks by the reporter, and vehement abuse by the Evangelist. At a trial of reapers and binders afc Palmerston, M'Cormick's was 1, Woods' 2, Osborne's 3.
