THE WOOL SALES.

Last series commenced on April 7, and terminated oq May 12. The total number of bales catalogued was 164,277. Mr Helmuth Schwarlze reports as follows : — " The attendance of buyers was good throughout. Prices during the first fortnight rose Id to 2 J per lb, and for superior, 2d to 3d per lb. At the close of the sales quotations returned to their starting point. The ! general tendency of the market was towards improvement. Closing rates vary little from those, of the preceding series of sales, but the average result shows an indisputable amelioration. Foreign buyers operated with exceptional vigour, and the, quantity taken j for export amounted to from 90,000 to 95,000 bales. European clips coming forward in June will prevent further improvement, but present rates will probably be maintained for next sales." The arrivals for the June sales, up to May 19, were :-j-From New South Wales and Queensland], 34,735 bales ; Victoria, 66,735 balqs ; South Australia, 20,712 bales; Western Australia, 3747 bales; Tasmania, 6752 bales; New Zealand, 28,938 bales; Cape, 18,262 bales ; making a total of 180,000 bales. The saleß will commence onJuiie 16.
