RICCARTON ELECTION.

— ♦- The polling took place at the schoolroom, Riccart>n, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday. Precisely at 4 o'clock, Dr Donald announced the result to be as follows :—

The Returning Officer declared Mesßrs Tosswill and Delaraain to be duly elected. Each of the candidates briefly addressed the electors. In doing so, Mr O'Callaghan said that the result might have been otherwise if he had canvassed the district. Nevertheless, he expected to poll more than twenty votes, for he had received fifty promises of support. He was satisfied, however, that the electors had sent two good men to the Provincial Council. In conclusion, he could only assure them that if he could ever do the district a service, he would do it, and that if his services were required at any time in the future, he would be most happy to serve their interests to the best of bis ability. He would not have come forward if he had known that Vlr Tosswill was going to stand. On the motion of Mr Tosswill, seconded by Mr Delamain, a rote of thanks was passed to the Returning Officer. Before the meeting terminated, Mr Tosswill said that Mr O'Callagban had acted in the most gentlemanlike manner throughout the contest. He had therefore much pleasure in proposing three cheers for the beaten candidate. Three cheers were accordingly given for Mr O'Callaghan, and the meeting dispersed.
