Kaiapoi Pbesbytekiaw Church. — A soiree will take place at this church at 5.30 p.m. to-day. The proceeds will be appropriated towards reducing existing liabilities on the church. Ashley Bank. — Mr Maskell and Mr Crosby met the electors of the Sefton dis- ■ trict on Thursday evening. After- explaining their views on the various political topics of the.day, which .were listened to with great attention, votes of confidence in the speakers as Candidates to represent the district in the Provincial Council were passed unanimously. Gazette. — The New Zealand Gazette idated May 12 contains the following items : — |The appointment of Mr W. C. Andrews as Registrar of births, deaths, and marriages ;for the Distric<rx)f Geraldine ; a notification (that His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to issue Letters of Naturalization under "The Aliens Act, 1866," in favour of Louis Langeshwardt,- Southbridge, ploughSoran, and James Dwyer." Akaroa, settler. SyTuE Menpblßs6hn Society.— Under this title a society has been formed which has for its object the improvement of the members in the knowledge and practice of modern classical, vocal and instrumental music. The president of the society is Dr Prinß,"and Mr R. Parker has been" appointed musical director. The announcement that " Athalie " will be performed on Friday next, atr the Town Hall, as the first effort of the society, has doubtless been received with pleasure aid lovers of music. x, .— Owing"; to the non-atten-pfence of members, the deciding match, North and South, was postponed. A scratch match was played, Messrs Hall and Pratt acting 'as captains of sides. After a well contested game, Mr Pratt kicked one goal. All the members ought to be on the ground' in proper time. One very noticeable mistake is, that so many Of the new members and boys remain near goal, and spoil the kicks of the goal-keepers, and long kicks, to the great disadvantage of the side 'io which ''they 1 belong. Members ■ would do well to read :the rules. Heathcote Er.ECTioir.- i -A meeting of the electors was; held :on Saturday evening at the Halswell schoolroom,. to hear the views' of the several candidates , for' the- 'Provincial Council. A considerable number of electors Vere present. Mr John Miln was voted to the chair, and the meeting was addressed by Messrs. .J. S. Williams, Cowlishaw, Fisher, and Huddlestone. The views expressed by these gentlemen were substantially the same as have already appeared in our reports of previous meetings. The meeting was subsequently addressed by Messrs XV. Parish and Nairn. On the motion of Mr Archer,, the thanks of the meeting were given to thei candidates for their attendance, and after the usual vote of thanks to the Chairman the meeting, which had been very quiet and i attentive throughout, was dissolved.

Tkmplbton.— The musical spmfe ? 7ifr;'*^c Meat Factory have been amusing *^i^ long winter evenings by practising singing, and on Thursday last the " Factory Christy Minstrels " made their first appearance at tae school-room, and gave a concert in aid) of the Church Spire Fund. Several things were against them, viz., this being their first appearance in public, and the want of a proper platform for the breakdowns, dances, &c, and for the extraordinary performances of Bones and Tony. During the course of the evening Borne photographs were taken in an entirely new way, causing considerable merriment. Some of the riddles and local puns were very good ; and, without particularising any one portion, the same may be said of the whole performance. We hope the Minstrels will always obtain, should they perform again in public, a repetition of Thursday evening— a crowded house, and a pleased audience. Ross.— The local paper of May 11 says : — In the Great Ross Extended Company's they have no difficulty in contending with the water. The depth of the shaft is 155 feet, and it is in contemplation, after bottoming, to sink 50 feet deeper in order to open out lower drives. The All Nations claim are down to the depth of 165 feet, and have very little water to contend against. The depth of wash is 8 feet. They struck the reef, which is an overhanging one from Sailor's Gully, at a depth of 53 feet. They have got gold in a face of 8 feet in width, and have obtained as much as 14 or 15 ounces of gold in the two shifts. The wheel works capitally. By computation, it brought up one bucket of dirt in 45 seconds. The shareholders have every reason to be satisfied with the results, as it bids fair to outdo the far-famed claim the Blue Jacket, which at present is obtaining good and payable dirt at the higher levels. The recent costly labour gone into by the shareholders in this company will be most satisfactory, and they will be well rewarded for their trouble as long as tbe washdirt continues to yield as at present. Ellesmere Road Board. — At a meeting of the Ellesmere Road Board, held at Leeston on May 2, tenders for the Killinchy drain were placed before the Board, that of Messrs Sherratt and Co. being accepted. For a line of branch road, the tender of M'Gee and Davidson, at los per chain, was accepted, £3 extra to be paid on the line of the Boggy Creek. The following requests were granted upon the usual terms:—Culverts at Brown's corner ; at junction of Miln's, Roger's, and M'Vennie's land; from main road into Leeston town belt ; from main road into Webster's accommodation road. Mr Inwood asked for a culvert on the Beach road. The overseer was directed to inspect and report at next meeting. Messrs Hepburn and Gilmour asked that 20 chains of Blackler's road be metalled. The overseer was directed to call for tenders, re turnable by May 14. Messrs Dudley and Lawrence, and others, requested that 25 chains of Collison's Creek be cleared; the request was granted, petitioners to pay onethird of the expense before the commencement of the work. A culvert was ordered to be put in at the junction of Beetham's road and the Timber Depot road. The Board decided that a rate of sixpence in the pound be struck. The pay-sheet, amounting to £118 Bs, was passed for payment. A meeting of the Board was also held at Leeston on Wednesday, May 11, at which were present Messrs E. J. Lee (chairman), J. Rennie, G. B. Woodman, C. J. Bridge, and R. Gillett. The ratepayers' list, prepared in consequence of the decision of the Board on the 2nd, that it was expedient to levy a rate of sixpence in the pound, Vas laid on the table, examined, and duly signed by the Chairman. The overseer was instructed to advertise the decision of the Board, both in the daily and weekly papers, in the usual form; to get out the separate notices at once; and to state that the time for the payment of the rate fixed by the Board is on or before June 15. The overseer was directed to arrange at once to get a short length of the Selwyn and Bealey road formed and metalled without delay — about three chains near Ledgerwood's land. With reference to Hepburn and Gilmour's request, in the minutes of last meeting, it was decided by the Board that the work should only be undertaken on condition that the persons interested contributed one-third of the cost in cash beforehand.
