Flax Industry
Important Discovery ARTIFICIAL SILK AND WAXED PAPERS A development in . the flax industry which will in all probability be of immense importance to the Dominion is announced from Auckland.
Exhaustive laboratory tests over a long period have shown that it is possible to produce celiaphone paper (a wrapping of the type found on many chocolates and in cigarette and tobacco packages) and artificial silk from Phormium tenax, or New Zealand flax.
It is understood that as soon as negotiations are concluded a factory will be established at Mercer.
The possibilities ahead of the new proposal are unlimited, not only for the local market but for export and it may well save the flax industry from ruin and turn it into one of the Dominion’s most important activities. Already it is said that one of the largest firms of tobacco manufacturers has made enquiries with a view to entering into a oontract for oellaphone paper,
