A CLUB ROBBERY
VALUABLES WORTH £12,650 j RECOVERED A Stetson hat provided the clue which enabled two Melbourne detectives to recover £12,650 worth of stolen property last week. Oh Saturday, June 4th, Mr Otway R. Falkiner, pastoralist and racehorse owner, of Widgiewa, New South Wales, stayed at the Australian Club. When he retired he left his valuables on the dressing table, and forgot to lock the door. When he awoke he found that his wallet, containing £12,600 worth of script in Falkiner and Sons, Limited, £37 in notes, gold watch and chain, and matchbox, were missing. * Detectives assigned to the case found that a Stetson hat had been left in the billiard room of the Club on Saturday night, and was missing on Monday morning, Their investigations led them to visit a boardinghouse in Albert Park. They found that a couple had booked a room in the house, but had not used it on Monday nights The detectives found the script land the gold matchbox in the room. They hid themselves in the room, and -after waiting half an hour a woman Entered. She was detained, and soon afterwards, a man also walked into the room. ■ ■ He was immediately arrested. The detectives found in his possession a gold watch and chain, and £2610a in notes.
