WAIKATO.

— A stranger of a courteous and amiable disposition visiting Samaria a few days ago was much shocked by observing several ladies all looking in one direction, and laughing hysterically till they were on the very verge of convulsions. Seeing that the moment was critical, and fearing that the dear creatures weie being subjected to undue excitement, he sprang forward and asked in breathless tones if he could assist them in any way. None of the group could answer him, but amidst fresh shrieks, pointed feebly with their handkerchiefs at an approaching figure. The gallant stranger fiercely facing the cause of their agitation, observed what at first sight appeared, for he is rather shortsighted, a gigantic round of beef walking on a knife and fork, and with a large hat placed on the upper side of it, or a tortoise swagging along on its hind legs, and dressed in sporting costume. But this impression, and his consequent anxiety were immediately relieved by one of the hysterical fair ones exclaiming with gasps— " Oh, dear, there is nothing to be afraid of. Thank you very much. It is only that absurd little creature, fcrobble, m nis new tourist coat. That upset us Isn't it too ridiculous, though ? ballet dancer crossed his mind, and it must be confessed he joined in the he, he, he, from which he was only recovered by the prompt administration of beer by a Good Samaritan who happened to be going down that way from Jerusalen to Jericho.
