FALSE STATEMENT MADE. PURPORTED ROBBERY. CHIROPODIST SENTENCED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association). HAMILTON, Jan. 10. Described as the second case of its kind in New Zealand, a charge of making a false written statement to the police without genuine belief in its truth, was preferred against Frank Newsom llilein Bird, a chiropodist, aged 28, in the Hamilton Court to-day. The police alleged they had been put to considerable trouble through the false allegation made by the accused to the effect that two men had robbed him of £BO. Bird, who had a previous conviction for the theft of a revolver, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment.
