A RECORD.
DECEMBER GOLD OUTPUT. Approximately £3OOO. SUBSIDISED PROSPECTORS. NEARLY £6OOO FOR YEAR. A record amount of gold for any one month, since the inception of the scheme, was won in the Thames district during December by men engaged on the Unemployment Board’s gold prospecting scheme, the approximate value, according to figures supplied by Mr. S. Smith, the local certifying officer, being £2964. For December, 1934, the value of gold recovered under the scheme was £BBS. Thames and Coromandel. For the month in the Thames area 1440 z. 4dwt. of gold were won, valued approximately at £2550. In the Coromandel area 750 z. 13dwt. were returned at an approximate value of £414. In addition to these figures bonuses amounting to £l6l/13/7 on previous sales were paid out. During December about 135 men were engaged prospecting under the Board’s scheme, and of this number about 22 were responsible for the greater part of the December returns.
The year’s figures show’ that 1071 oz. were won, being valued approximately at £5872.
