PAEROA-POKENO RAILWAY. REPLY FROM MINISTER. Matters m regard to the PaeroaPokeno railway claimed the attention of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce when a letter from Mr. J. Bitchener, Minister for Public Works, was before the last meeting. The Minister stated; “The remarks contained in your letter in support of the Chamber’s opinion that this line is one which should receive first consideration in the event of railway construction works being resumed, are noted and will be borne in mind. For your information, 1 may say that there is no present intention to resume raliway construetiou.”
It was pointed out that the lato Sir William Herries supported the construction of the proposed line, which would greatly reduce the travelling time for fat stock from the Bay of Plenty to Westfield. Passenger fares would be reduced and there would be a saving in travelling time between the Bay of Plenty and Auckland of two and a quarter hours. Some people at Paeroa had favoured an improved road instead of the railway. The line, as far as the Bay of Plenty was concerned, was. very important. Such a work would provide suitable employment for relief workers.
It was agreed that the matter of renewing representations be left in the hands of the secretary to bring before the Chamber at a later stage.
