MAORI CHIEF MISSING.
FEARS FOR SAFETY,
AXE AND CANOE FOUND,
POLICE DRAGGING RIVER
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAIROA, July 17.
Haenga Paretipua, a leading chief in the district, left home yesterday to gather firewood. A canoe, axe and coat were found by the side of the river, and also marks nearby, indicating that he may have slipped. As he has not returned home, the police are dragging the river, as it is feared the chief has been drowned.
