A HEAVY PENALTY.
NO LAND TAX RETURNS,
WEALTHY MAN’S LETHARGY,

Charles Thomas Keeble pleaded guilty to failure to furnish returns of land. It was/stated for the Department that there was only one information, but the history of the defendant’s relations with the Department showed the case was more serious than usual.
After hearing the facts, Mr Page, S.M., said: “I- will have to impose a heavy penalty in this case.” For two years past the Department has rendered to the) defendant, who is a wealthy man, default assessments on land, valued at £54,000, and the defendant let these go, although in the meantime he knew he had acquired more land, bringing the value up to £68,000. Defendant said nothing and avoided additional tax of £BOO over the two years. This was subsequently paid. A fine of £IOO was imposed, with costs. lb '
David Daily was fined £5 and' Alired Ernest Ellery and Thomas Ellery t*2 on similar chorges.
