WAN DIES ON WAY TO HOSPITAL

Terrible injuries were sustained by a head ganger when a charge of dynamite which he was attending exploded prematurely, 'blowing the unfortunate man 10 yards and over a steep 20ft. fcank. When he was picked up one of his arms was nearly torn off, one eye was blown out and the other badly injured and several ribs were broken. He died yesterday ' afternoon. The accident happened in the Wairoa district while on l’oad construction work. The deceased . was George White, aged 40. a widower. He was in charge of a gang engaged in blasting a rock face. White had fixed one of the four /charges and was preparing a second when it exploded.

Although in great agony White was still conscious when his mates reached him. He was carried up to the road on an improvised stretcher and then on for a short distance to the lakeside landing.

At nine o’clock yesterday morning, ■when the landing stage was reached, there began an agonising journey of So miles to the Wairoa Hospital. A launch took the dying man to Lake House. He was, then conveyed by the Public Works Department’s ambulance 39 miles to the hospital.

Shortly after admission yesterday afternoon he succumbed.
