The opinion was expressed by a Wanganui farmer recently that the “hobby” enlf slaughter would prove of more detriment to the dairying industry than was generally thought possible. He pointed out that while the industry served a useful purpose in that it afforded a means of getting rid of the calves of poor producers very profitably, it also made an egress for many animals that should come into the dairying industry. His opinion was that instead of disposing of the calves a few days after birth, they should hold them and reap bigger reward by selling them for milking purposes.
