SERIOUS CHARGE.

SPRINGSTON SHOOTING CASE. 1 ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER. (Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 12. Two charges of attempted murder against James Scott Main, Acclimatisation Society’s ranger, were heard at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. The eases arose out of an affray at Springston on September 14, when bullet wounds were sustained by two men, Bartholomew McEvedy and Bernard Nuttall, the former being wounded in the wrist and the thigh and the latter in the hand. Medical evidence was given regarding the nature of the wounds, which were not serious. McEvedy stated that he arrived at the hotel at half-past eleven at, night, and with his brother entered the hotel. They had drinks and heard a disturbance in the commercial room, and ascertained that Main, who was drunk, had been ejected. Later on, outside" the hotel, Main held up witness and others with a revolver, saying tliftt he would shoot anyone who moved. The revolver was fired and witness was hit twice. He fell to the ground. Nuttall gave evidence that accused accosted him in the hotel, makingoffensive remarks about the ladies in the motoring party. Witness remonstrated and Main was removed. The case, is proceeding.
