MINING NEWS.
WHANGAMATA PROPRIETARY COMPANY. This company's main reef continues to open up most encouragingly, and for a length of over 200 feet, where it has been driven upon, the ore is quite consistent in quality to that met with on the surface. Several gentlemen who have seen the reef and who are competent to form an idea of the value of the ore are of opinion that the company has a very bright future before it, KARAKA MINES.
The Austin Friar's Syndicate, who have taken over the above property, have been operating for some time past, and .since commencing they have enlarged and repaired the old Atlantic tunnel for a length of 300£t. They purpose when they meet the solid face to extend the drive forward to the Hague-Smith crosslode, and drive along its course, the chief aim being to meet with the junction of the various lodes trending the opposite strikes, and forming a junction with the famous cross-Jode. The development, conducted as it is at a substantial depth, should open up an important faection of auriferous country which traverses this ieine from north to south. Two lodes have been intersected in this low level, one of which is reputed to have produced gold at the rate of 7dwts to the ton, but very little work has been done upon it, and no doubt the company will drive upon it towards where it should junction with the Hague-Smith. A large amount of gold has been obtained from the surface sections but no attempt has ever been made to explore the lodes at the deeper areas, although a good deal of development work has been carried out from time to time.
