“A LOT OF HOT AIR”
Free Electricity For New Industries “No; that is a lot of hot air,” declared Mr W. H. Hall at a meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board yesterday when Mr H. J. R. Somerville asked if the Timaru Borough Council had an arrangement to supply free electricity to new industries. “Did not Dunedin decide to give new industries free power?” asked Mr W. Lindsay. “It cannot oe done," replied Mr Hall. The Audit Department will allow a special rate to be quoted for electricity, but it will not condone it being given away. No local body can provide free electricity.” Discussion was introduced when Mr Somerville suggested that the Board should solicit the co-operation of the Timaru Borough Council and the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce in advancing the utilities of Timaru for the establishment of a linseed oil factory. Mi- Somerville said that the factory at Dunedin had been destroyed by fire, and he suggested that the rebuilding should be done at Timaru. Members agreed with Mr Somerville, and the support suggested by him will be enlisted and Timaru’s amenities will be restated.
