DEFICIT EXCEEDS £17,800

Timaru Harbour Board Government Subsidy Awaited An actual deficit of £17,800 faces the Timaru Harbour Board on the completion of the year ending September 30. This information was given a meeting of the Board yesterday by the chairman (Mr K. S. Goodman). ■‘An application by the Board to the Government for a subsidy is still being considered by the Treasury Committee and no doubt the Board will hear the result of the application early next week. At the moment I am unable to give you any Information concerning the amount or how the matter is being dealt with by the committee,” continued Mr Goodman. The month of September has been a fairly good one from a shipping point of view and it will be seen from the cargo returns to the end of August that the amount of cargo passing over the wharves already exceeds the quantity shipped for - the whole year ending September, 1944. There has been a fair amount of cargo shipped during this month and no doubt the total figures will disclose the largest tonnage fox' any of the war years. “There has been an improvement in the shipping during this year and the Board does not look forward to still greater returns during the coming year," added Mr Goodman. “In spite of the fact that there has been a decrease of nearly 10,000 tons in potatoes shipped this year, this has been replaced by other cargoes. Full details will be ready by next meeting.” During August, receipts totalled £4298, of which wharfage yielded £2187. Expenditure during the month amounted to £3340, the principal item of which was £1797 spent on the dredge.
