WAIMATE GOLF CLUB

Closing Day Fixed Tournament Planned The Waimate Golf Club's season will be concluded on October 13. This decision was made at a meeting of the club's committee, when it was agreed that mixed foursomes be played over 18 holes on closing' day. The meeting discussed the probable abandonment of the Oamaru Club's Labour Day tournament. Plans were made for a men's tournament on the Waimate links on that day. The final of the senior championship has been tentatively fixed for Saturday next. Repertory Society There was a large attendance for the final evening of the Waimate Repertory Society’s season, when three one-act plays were presesnted. A feature of the programme was the appearance of the Waimate Junior Orchestra, under Mr G. Kirk. The president of the Society, Mrs M. J. Friel, after thanking those who had assisted during the season, referred with regret to the departure of Mrs C. G. Holmes, a foundation member. A gift is to be sent to Mrs Holmes. In a letter read by the president, Mrs Holmes expressed good wishes for the future of the Society. A thriller produced by Mrs J. C. Winning was enacted by Messrs D. Newall, F. J. Bailey. J. C. Winning and F. Grayson. The scene was set in a house in a London suburb, and the theme developed a murder mystery. Mrs Winning also produced a drama in which the characters, in contrast to the preceding play, were all women. The producer also took part, the other players being Mrs R. C. Morgan and Misses M. Quartermain and E. M. Cameron. Another all-women cast presented a comedy, producer of which was Mrs A. H. Partridge. The players were Mesdames F. J. Bailey, R. Baker, and F. Boys, and Misses J. Morrison, Mitchell, and M. Morriss. Boxing It is understood that a title bantamweight boxing match between Ted Hogarth (West Coast) and Ron Hawes (Christchurch), will be staged by the Waimate Boxing Association in the near future. Prison Camp Bread What might appear to be a block of cement is displayed in a window at the Waimate Patriotic Depot. It is a loaf of bread issued as the daily ration for seven New Zealand prisoners of war in a German camp. About lOins in length, 4ins across and 4ins in depth, the loaf was brought home by Private A. W. Harper on his repatriation recently. Shop Renovations Renovations have been the order in quite a number of business premises recently. Work in modernising the interior of several shops has been carried out after long delay caused by shortage of labour and material. In addition, the repainting of other shopfronts has made a further demand upon the time and energy of the limited number of painters available. Personal The Rev. R. J. Griffiths, C.F., Minister of Knox Church, will visit Waimate at the week-end after an absence of nearly six years. Mr Griffiths elected to remain behind with wounded New Zealanders in Crete, with the result that he spent four years in German prison of war camps.
