IMPROVEMENT IN HEALTH

Children at Camps The 1944-45 summer health camp of 65 children was again held at the Geraldine Technical High School for a full period of three weeks from January 4 to January 26 and proved both successful and enjoyable, states the annual report of the South Canterbury Health Camp Association. The reduction to 65 children in this year’s camp was due to the stipulations by the Medical Officer of Health in connection with the dormitory accommodation available. The children’s health showed a marked improvement, the average increase in weight being four pounds two and a half ounces, whilst one boy gained nine pounds, four gained eight pounds, and eight children gained seven pounds. The outstanding success can be attributed to the very capable management and care of the matron, Miss K. McGuire, and her staff. Children were admitted from various districts in South Canterbury, 50 per cent, being from Timaru, and 50 per cent, from country districts including Waimate, Pleasant Point, and Temuka.

Donations of vegetables, fruit, jam, meat,, etc., were received from firms and the general public of Timaru and Geraldine, etc., whilst schools in South Canterbury gave a large quantity of eggs. Railway Road Services provided buses for transporting the children to and from the camp. The Glenelg Health Camp is now in operation at Christchurch and the Association had been allocated beds for five children. The first group of five would enter the Christchurch Camp shortly for a period of six weeks. Health Stamps Health stamps again proved popular with philatelists and the supporters of children’s health camps, whilst business firms in Timaru and district continued to purchase and use the stamps on correspondence. This year’s stamp will be placed on sale at Post Offices on October 1. Souvenir first day envelopes will be issued free to purchasers of health stamps. The thanks of the committee is extended to all who gave so willingly of their services to make the camp at Geraldine such a great success.
