EARLY SALVAGE

Wind-blown Timber (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. The Government regarded the immediate salvaging of timber blown down in Canterbury by a gale this year as a national emergency and was prepared to give every possible assistance in its recovery, stated the Commissioner of State Forests in a reply he gave in the House to-day to a question asked by Mr J. Acland and Mr R. G. Gerard. “The latest estimate by the State Forest Service of wind-blown timber in Canterbury amounts to 67,600,000 board feet, of which 28.000.000 board feet are owned by the Selwyn Plantation Board. 24.000.000 board feet by the State Forest Service, and 15.000.000 board leet by private owners,” stated the Minister. “Active negotiations have been proceeding with both owners and sawmillers on the basis of salvaging this timber over a maximum period of three years as a means of meeting the heavy demands for timber during" that period. Some assistance by way of securing new plant and equipment has already been given, and all further assistance necessary to implement the necessary programme of production has been promised."
