GOOD DUALITY GARMENTS

Collection For UNRRA Tribute To Schoolchildren

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 24. The good quality of the garments given had been an outstanding feature of the clothes drive in Timaru, said Mr A. Manning (Timaru) when the collection of clothes by schoolchildren for the people of devastated Europe was discussed by the Canterbury Education Board to-day.

The secretary of the Board (Mr L. E. Rowley) said the Canterbury schoolchildren raised approximately £ll,OOO for patriotic purposes during the war. The chairman (Mr C. S. Thompson) said that the children in Christchurch collected upwards of 500 cases of clothing. The Board asked for a suggestion by the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society as to the disposal of the proceeds of the sale of three ambulances given by the schoolchildren of Canterbury and Westland for the Division in the Pacific and now surplus to requirements. The chairman suggested that the results of the sale, possibly up to £5OO per ambulance, should be devoted to providing a scholarship for the children of returned men. It was decided that a sub-committee should present a recommendation to the next Board meeting. The Board decided to ask the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) to give consideration to the installation of telephones in all schools.
