CLAREMONT

Valedictory Social A large, gathering of neighbours and friends assembled in the Claremont School to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs J. Linwood and family, who are leaving to reside in Timaru. Messrs McConnell and Green referred to Mr and Mrs Linwood's good neighbourly qualities, and said they would be missed. Mr W. Black paid a tribute on behalf of the Tennis Club, of which Miss Linwood had been a valued member Mr McConnell then presented each guest with a sum of money to buy a memento of their stay in Claremont. After the usual musical honours, a dance concluded a very pleasant evening. Victory' Festivities The proceedings at the Claremont victory celebrations commenced with a short service in the school in memory of fallen soldiers, and others who gave their lives for freedom. Mrs Balfour gave a short talk on the meaning and cost of victory, and appealed to all to he 1 ' the Government in its huge task of rehabilitation, a task beyond the power of any Government without the help and good will of those for whom so much had been sacrificed. The children’s fancy dress party was then held, and the afternoon spent playing games and dancing. The School Committee provided ice creams and afternoon tea; Mrs Brien kindly gave two prizes which were awarded to Billy McVey for the most original and June Black for the prettiest dress. Mesdames White, Seyb and Talbot judged the dresses. In the evening a fancy dress dance was held. Community singing-, led by Mr W. Black, of the songs of two wars, was enjoyed. Mrs Andrews delighted the audience with two step dances. Mr J. Wallace thanked those who had made the party such a success. A mystery parcel given by Miss Carron was won by Mrs Balfour. Music was supplied by Mr and Mrs H. Finn.
