NOISY WELCOME

British Naval Task Force SYDNEY, Aug 24. Crowds > lined the Sydney foreshores early to-day to watch the arrival of units of the British Fleet which recently took part in the final assault on Japan. It was Sydney's first chance during the war of giving a fitting welcome to a naval task force fresh from battle honours. Five British warships, two aircraft-carriers, Implacable and Formidable arrived, escorted by the destroyers Undine. Urchine and Grenville, with Rear-Admiral Sir Philip Vian in command. Shinning in the harbour greeted the warships with sirens. Avengers and Corsairs of the returning units landed at a New South Wales air station yesterday. Another British carrier. Victorious, with the destroyer Urama, is due in Sydney this afternoon. All the ships have taken part in two big Pacific strikes, the first against Sakashima in May and the second against Japan itself. They have been at sea for three months.
